Hurricane season is part of life in South Florida, and planning ahead helps keep pets safe and calm during an emergency. Be sure to include your pet in your evacuation plan and never leave them behind if you must leave home.
Make sure your pet has up-to-date ID tags and, ideally, a microchip so you can be reunited if separated. Keep a grab-and-go pet kit ready with food, water, medications, and vaccination records sealed in a waterproof bag, as shelters and boarding facilities often require proof of vaccines.
Before a storm approaches, help your pet become comfortable with carriers, crates, or your home’s safe shelter area to reduce anxiety. If evacuation becomes necessary and you cannot take your pet to your destination, arrange boarding ahead of time so you aren’t making last-minute decisions during severe weather.
